26/01/2010 INGRES announces technology preview program for Ingres VectorWise

Demand for Groundbreaking Database Technology Strong as Ingres Partners and Customers Begin Performance Tests

Ingres Corporation, the leading open source database management company and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, announced today a technology preview program for Ingres VectorWise. Ingres VectorWise is a groundbreaking database technology that delivers the performance needed to conquer today's data explosion and is the first business software to fully take advantage of advances in modern chip technology. The technology preview program gives Ingres partners and customers an opportunity to access an early version of Ingres VectorWise and test the performance capabilities of the database. Initial results show that Ingres VectorWise achieves more than 10x performance gains. To learn more and apply to be part of the technology preview program, please go to www.ingres.com/vectorwise/preview-program.php.

"We are very pleased with the early interest that's been shown in Ingres VectorWise," said Roger Burkhardt, president and CEO, Ingres. "The early results being demonstrated by our partners and customers validate our initial tests - they show that Ingres VectorWise can easily analyze business data at the 'speed of thought' giving those who need to make business decisions an immediate advantage with far lower costs and with more than 10 times the speed."

How the Ingres VectorWise Technology Preview Program Works

Partners and customers who are part of the technology preview program are able to download an early version of Ingres VectorWise and are given assistance from Ingres with testing, assessments, and benchmarks. Customers will provide the results of functional and performance tests on the product and feedback to Ingres. As an open source company, Ingres thrives on the innovation that partners and customers bring to its products. Those who participate in the technology preview program will help in shaping Ingres VectorWise and ultimately putting their stamp on a technology that will enable people to sort through millions of business records inexpensively and in a matter of seconds.

Ingres VectorWise - Early Results

Dozens of leading partners and customers representing regions around the world are participating in the technology preview program.

Rapid-I, a leading provider of software, solutions, and services in the fields of predictive analytics, data mining, and text mining has been testing Ingres VectorWise as part of a new data mining engine for RapidMiner, its flagship product that stands as the world-leading open-source system for data and text mining. Rapid-I has already seen dramatic results in its initial testing of Ingres VectorWise.

"We are overwhelmed by the performance gains we have seen from Ingres VectorWise," said Dr. Ingo Mierswa, CEO, Rapid-I GMBH. "The new implementation of sophisticated algorithms for data analysis was easily done due to the clean and standard SQL programming interface. And thanks to Ingres VectorWise the creation of prediction models was even faster than for in-memory calculation - without any restriction for data set size or without need of loading the data into the client at all. This is what data analysis should look like today and we are looking forward to further exciting results made possible by Ingres VectorWise."

"Rapid-I is a perfect example of the unique efficiency of Ingres VectorWise in making benchmark quality performance possible on simple, ordinary equipment," said Bill Maimone, senior vice president and CTO, Ingres. "An early demo of a combined product of Ingres VectorWise and RapidMiner running a notebook provided better performance and scalability than a server with a standard solution. This is an incredible result and I am confident other participants in the technology preview program will see similar performance gains."

More about Ingres VectorWise

The goal of the Ingres VectorWise project, a collaboration between Ingres and VectorWise, a spin out from the leading database research team at CWI of Amsterdam, a research institute in mathematics and computer science, is to improve the performance of database systems by orders of magnitude and to bridge the efficiency gap between databases and application specialized solutions. The Ingres VectorWise project allows business software to get the best out of modern chips and process business data at rates that were previously impossible. The result of the project is a ground-breaking database kernel that is now combined with the leading open source relational database from Ingres.

"We are delighted about how well the cooperation with Ingres has worked," said Peter Boncz, award winning CWI scientist and VectorWise co-founder. "Our partnership with Ingres will allow us to unleash the Ingres VectorWise product to a global mass audience using a cost-effective open-source distribution model."

"I am thrilled that a result of many years of research and development at VectorWise is now accessible to our customers and partners," said Marcin Zukowski, CEO, VectorWise. "The feedback we are getting from these early adopters proves that our solution has a great value for many organizations and also allows our team to rapidly provide further improvements to the product."
